This Year is the Year: A Quick Primer on Obtaining Your LGBT Business Enterprise Certification

Obtaining LGBTBE (LGBT Business Enterprise) certification can be a valuable tool for businesses that are owned, operated, and controlled by individuals who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, or transgender. One of the most widely recognized certifying organizations is the National Gay and Lesbian Chamber of Commerce (NGLCC).

The NGLCC's certification process begins with the submission of an application and a fee. Business owners must provide documentation that verifies that they are at least 51% owned, operated, and controlled by an individual who identifies as lesbian, gay, bisexual, or transgender. This may include items such as a driver's license or passport, articles of incorporation, and tax returns. Regional partners of the NGLCC, such as the OUT Georgia Business Alliance, Equality Chamber of Commerce DC Metro Area, and Carolinas LGBT+ Chamber of Commerce, are available to assist with the application process.

Once the application and documentation have been received, an NGLCC representative will conduct an on-site visit to the business. During this visit, the representative will interview the business owner and review the business's operations to ensure that it meets the NGLCC's standards for certification.

After the on-site visit, the NGLCC's certification committee will review the application and make a final determination. If the business is approved, it will be granted LGBTBE certification for a period of three years.

It's important to note that the NGLCC's certification process is rigorous and designed to ensure that only legitimate businesses owned and operated by LGBT individuals are granted certification. However, the benefits of certification can be significant.

As an LGBTBE-certified business, you will have access to a network of other certified businesses and corporate partners. You will also be able to participate in NGLCC-sponsored events and programs, and you may be considered for exclusive contracts and procurement opportunities with corporations and government entities.

In addition, being LGBTBE-certified can help to increase visibility and credibility for your business and can serve as a powerful marketing tool to attract customers and clients who are committed to supporting LGBT-owned businesses.

Overall, obtaining LGBTBE certification can be a valuable step for any business owned and operated by LGBT individuals. By following the process outlined by the NGLCC, you can gain access to valuable resources and opportunities while also demonstrating your commitment to diversity and inclusion.
